Sprinter Van Recovery Kit (Backland Teal)

Backland Adventures runs guided, vehicle-based overland trips up and down the West Coast: the Olympic Peninsula, the Oregon coast, the high desert. Craig Arant and Jeremy Sanchez lead them, they host Storyteller Overland's Beyond the Pavement trips for MODE van owners, and they take beginners: safe off-road driving and recovery get taught on the trail, not assumed. In September 2026 they ran a beach recovery clinic with a Storyteller Sprinter buried to the axles and this teal rope doing the work. The Backland Teal kit is the van kit they run.

Only the color. It's the Sprinter Van Recovery Kit with the rope and shackles in Backland teal: the same 1 inch Kinetic-X rope rated 33,000 lb, the same three 1/2 inch Hitch Heros, two soft shackles and the 10 foot static bridle, at the same price as the olive kit. One size, 1 inch by 30 feet, for loaded vans and overland rigs from 7,000 to 10,200 lb. Need the 20 foot rope? The olive Sprinter kit has it.

That's the problem this kit is built around. Up front, the 10 foot static bridle spreads the pull across two points so no single bracket takes a 9,000 lb load, and it keeps the pull low, where a top-heavy van wants it. In back, the 1/2 inch Hitch Hero rigs straight through the receiver, no hitch shackle, no pin. Around a frame rail or a control arm, the Hitch Hero's sleeve takes the metal edge. Same rope inside, same ratings. The two regular soft shackles are for smooth points: tow hooks, bridle eyes, the rope's own eyes. The three Hitch Heros add a guarded sleeve, so they rig straight through a receiver or around a frame rail without the metal chewing through, and you can slide the sleeve back to inspect the shackle underneath. On a van with no real recovery points, that's most of your attachment options.

It's sized for loaded vans and overland rigs between 7,000 and 10,200 lb: Sprinter, Transit, ProMaster, 4x4 conversions, slide-ins and the trucks that pull them out. The 1 inch rope is rated at 33,000 lb and stretches over 30 percent, so a 9,000 lb van comes out of the sand on a soft, building pull instead of a yank. Size the rope to the rig doing the pulling, by its loaded weight, and don't size up if you're between sizes.

Every Kinetic-X rope and shackle is pull-tested to failure by an independent lab in California before we publish a rating. Every rope carries its production date on the tag, so you always know how old it is.

Every piece carries a lifetime warranty under proper use, within its published service life, which starts the day it's shipped. Ropes and shackles are good for 10 years stored properly, shaded and out of the weather, or 5 years if they live exposed on a roof rack, a rear carrier or a bumper. The rope: clean it if it's dirty, then run your hands down the whole length and make sure it feels the same end to end. A rope that took a hard pull isn't automatically done; if a stretch of it feels too stiff, retire it. The shackles: heavy fuzz on the outside is normal. Slide the Hitch Hero's sleeve back and look at the strands; if you see a tear, retire it, and if you don't, it stays in service. The inspection guide walks through both in two minutes.
