Winching questions
Tow strap or snatch strap?
The tow strap is polyester and doesn't stretch. It's the beater for the long flat tow on dirt trails and fire roads, so you can save your good gear. The snatch strap is nylon 6 and stretches. Use it to tow a dead rig out over hard rock trails, where you're tugging hard the whole way and a strap with no give would jerk and break things. Don't yank a stuck rig with the tow strap.
What comes in the Winch Kit?
A 90 foot armored synthetic winch line, a 50 foot winch line extension, a friction pulley and an Oval Winch Line Stopper. The stopper comes off completely while you're winching, so there's no metal on the line when it's working. They're sold together because they get used together.
When do I need the extension?
When the nearest anchor is farther away than your winch line reaches. The extension adds 50 feet.
What does the pulley do?
It turns a straight pull into a redirect when the anchor is off to one side, or into a 2:1 pull. It rides on a soft shackle rated higher than the winch line. The pulley comes in the Winch Kit.
When do I use a bridle?
A bridle does three jobs. It centers the pull on mountain passes and splits the load across two recovery points. It handles controlled pulls in tight, technical terrain, where rock rash and sharp-edged attachment points would chew up a strap. And the Hero Bridle works like a long soft shackle that wraps around metal edges, so you can pull from rims, A-arms, frames and other unusual points. The 12' Pro Bridle is short on purpose, so the other driver has less slack to run over or drag. Once you're past the hard part and need a longer tow, switch to the Snatch Strap.
